The MTED Pack House in Lapaha has officially achieved its full HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) Certification, marking a significant milestone for Tongaโs agricultural exports. The certification was awarded to the Ministry of Trade and Economic Development in August 2024 and was formally presented by H.E Brek Batley, Australian High Commissioner on behalf of PHAMA Plus on February 28, 2025, to Hon. Kapelieli Lanumata, Minister of Trade and Economic Development.
The HACCP certification is a globally recognized standard for food safety management, quality assurance and international best practices in agriculture processing. Lapaha pack house has achieved full certification for exporting of fresh and frozen root crops, and fresh watermelon from receival to processing, packing, loading and dispatching. The certification was awarded by HACCP Australia, confirming that the Lapaha Pack House has successfully achieved the requirements for full HACCP certification.
The HACCP project was funded by the government of New Zealand and Australia through PHAMA Plus, highlighting the importance of international partnerships in supporting Tongaโs export growth. This certification expands market access for agricultural products and opens new opportunities for Tongan-made goods, strengthening the countryโs overall export potential.
Hon. Kapelieli Lanumata emphasized that this certification solidifies Tongaโs position as a trusted global trading partner. In his keynote address, he highlighted the importance of meeting food safety requirements, stating:
“Food safety is the foundation of consumer trust, trade, and economic growth. By achieving HACCP certification, we are taking a major step forward in ensuring that Tongan products meet international food safety benchmarks. This milestone opens up greater opportunities for export and trade expansion.”
H.E. Brek Batley, Australian High Commissioner, noted that this achievement creates new opportunities for local farmers, processors, and exporters, increases household incomes, and drives economic growth and job creation in Tonga. He also emphasized the reason behind New Zealand and Australiaโs continued investment in key sectors that drive Tongaโs economic growth. By supporting initiatives like HACCP certification, both governments aim to strengthen trade, build resilience in local industries, and create sustainable economic opportunities for Tongan communities.
A heartfelt malo โaupito to the governments of Australia and New Zealand, and the PHAMA Plus Program, for their invaluable support in making this achievement possible and for their continued commitment to enhancing Tongaโs export capabilities.
