First Tonga Informal Sector Survey

The Minister for Trade and Economic Development, Honourable Dr. Viliami Uasikē Latu,
launched the first Informal Sector Survey Report for Tonga this morning, Wednesday 1st June
2022. The report is the first of its kind in the Pacific region and is based on a survey conducted in
2021, commissioned by the Ministry in partnership with and financial assistance of the Asian
Development Bank (ADB). The survey was conducted by a local firm Survey Statistical Solutions
Management Tonga (SSSMT).
The report provides an in-depth information on the characteristic of informal businesses in Tonga,
its structure and operations, including operating challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. The
report will be the basis for the Ministry’s development of targeted policies and strategies to support
the growth of informal businesses in Tonga.
The report was endorsed by Cabinet in May 2022 and it is now available on the Ministry’s
