Tonga participated at the APLMF Forum meeting held at Bandung Indonesia from the 5-7 November, 2025. The Asia-Pacific Legal Metrology Forum (APLMF) is a forum of legal metrology authorities, with an objective to develop legal metrology and the promotion of free and open trade in the region through the harmonisation and removal of technical or administrative barriers to trade in the field of legal metrology. Tonga is currently a member of the Pacific Island Metrology Committee which is under the Pacific Island Forum, Pacific Quality Infrastructure.
Tonga is in its final stage of formalising full membership with APLMF. As member of the APLMF, Tonga will gain benefits in participation in their range of training/workshops, and involvement in developing regional legal metrology standards. As full membership, Tonga will join Working Groups to address specific priorities and participate in surveys that influence the forum’s direction.
“Tonga looks forward to becoming full membership with APLMF and gain access to capacity building opportunities to our Inspectors with upcoming trainings and workshops. This is also a great networking and learning platform to share experiences and best practices from member economies and is crucial for the development of metrology in Tonga” according to the CEO, Distaquaine Tuihalamaka.
Tonga and Samoa are the newest members from the Pacific joining Australia, NZ , Fiji, PNG and Kiribati.
Tonga’ s Weights and Measures Act 1988 is currently under review with funding assistance provided by British Standards Institution, UK.
Tonga’s participation at the APLMF Annual meeting was funded by the Pacer Plus Implementation Unit ( PPIU) and APLMF.
