From the Business Support Division of the Ministry of Trade and Economic Development (MTED), a basic skills training program has successfully been completed with the second group of participants in MTEDโ€™s one-week training program last week focused on tailoring. This program included 14 women from the central district of Tongatapu (from Tofoa to Vaini). The training was facilitated by Lavinia Egbert, a certified tailoring instructor accredited by the Tonga National Qualifications and Accreditation Board (TNQAB).

This initiative, launched as part of MTEDโ€™s broader efforts to incubate small-scale businesses, specifically targeted the informal sector to encourage entrepreneurial efforts through tailoring. โ€œThere is great joy and gratitude because, following this training, opportunities are opening up to earn some income to support the family,โ€ shared by one of the participants who had the privilege of attending the program.

The training focused on foundational knowledge and skills in tailoring (basic skills). As a stepping stone in MTEDโ€™s business incubation efforts, this initiative aims to inspire participants to transition from skill-building to launching their own small-scale enterprises as a registered business. Given its popularity, there is a strong desire for future training that will offer more advanced tailoring skills, further strengthening the foundation for sustainable business ventures.
