The Ministry of Trade and Economic Development (MTED) is currently reviewing and updating the Weights and Measures Act 1988.
As part of this work, Peter Harrington from British Standards Institution (BSI) is in Tonga to support stakeholder consultations and gather practical input that will inform proposed updates and new provisions for the Act. The review is supported through funding from UK International Development.
A key focus of the consultations is to identify issues and challenges faced in day to day trading, specific to each sector. The aim is to strengthen fair trading and consumer protection, and to align Tonga’s frameworks with international practice.
Consultations have been completed with local shop owners and fuel station businesses, as well as exporters, manufacturers, the Chamber of Commerce, cargo and shipping agencies, and airline agencies. Discussions will continue with relevant Government Ministries in the coming weeks.
